Gateway Regional awards $1000 'Healthy Woman Healthy Mind Scholarship'
Granite City, IL, July 9, 2012…… Gateway Regional Medical Center announced the winner of its first $1000 scholarship through its popular Healthy Woman program, Meagan Watson of Granite City. The scholarship was awarded based on an essay contest that addressed, "What does it mean to be a healthy woman and why is it important to be a healthy woman?"" The scholarship check was presented June 3 at the Healthy Woman Anniversary Event by KSDK's Kay Quinn and Ali Vincent, the first female winner from NBC's The Biggest Loser.
"We are honored to reach out to the youth of our community and foster a healthier lifestyle," said Kate Allaria, Director of Marketing at Gateway Regional. "This $1000 scholarship recognizes and rewards a special young woman in our community who successfully addressed what it means to be a healthy woman. The Healthy Woman program at Gateway Regional is just one way we can empower women in our community with the confidence to make informed health care decisions for themselves and their families; participate in free monthly health education events and classes; and procure information about health, relationships and life issues."
The essay competition was open to senior women who attended Marquette Catholic High School, Althoff Catholic High School, Madison High School, or Granite City High School and live within the hospital's service area. Applicants also had to maintain a 3.5 GPA.
